Resident Ruth Nelson is Enjoying Living in a Community of Friends at The Fountains

WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE?
Why live alone when you can love living in a community of friends with transportation, housekeeping and delicious meals?

“Everything is just immaculate. The meals are very good. I have nothing against anything here. It’s just wonderful. It’s just the perfect place for somebody. I’m so used to it now here it’s lovely. It really is lovely.” – Ruth Nelson, resident of The Fountains at RiverVue

MEET RUTH NELSON, A BRONX NATIVE WHO LEFT HER FAMILY HOME OF 69 YEARS FOR A LIFE SHE LOVES AT THE FOUNTAINS.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Ruth Nelson on Wednesday, February 8th, 2017. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)

Ruth’s parents lived in the Bronx, not far from Yankee Stadium. After welcoming Ruth into the world, they bought a house on Mace Avenue, which would become Ruth’s home for the next 69 years. She has fond memories of their summers on Sparkle Lake. After high school, Ruth started a secretarial career with Nestlé and Mobil Oil Corporation, retiring from Mobil as an Executive Secretary in their legal department. Ruth’s hobbies have included traveling with friends throughout Europe, Canada and the U.S., playing the piano, crocheting, knitting and raising and caring for pets. At The Fountains, she loves nothing more than sitting on the porch drinking lemonade with her good friend, Jean.

CHANGE CAN HAPPEN IN AN INSTANT
Ruth had never considered what might happen if she ever fell in the bathtub. She was living on her own in a large house when it happened. Luckily, she got the help she needed and landed in a rehabilitation setting where she happened to room with Jean, her future neighbor at The Fountains at RiverVue. Since nobody can predict the future, people are wise to imagine the what if’s and plan accordingly. What if I can no longer drive my car? What if I can’t get to the store? What if I need help getting into or out of the shower safely? The right retirement community has answers. Don’t rely on sheer luck. Start exploring your retirement living options today. “It’s one of those things that you think you’re never going to have a fall and that’s it. It’s terrible.” – Ruth Nelson

FRIENDS FOR LIFE
Ruth roomed with Jean by chance while rehabbing from her broken leg and they clicked. At The Fountains, they’ve become friends for life. Ever since Ruth moved in last June, they dine together, watch movies together and shoot the breeze over summer lemonade. Ruth not only enjoys the companionship of living at The Fountains, she also appreciates the conveniences of the dining, housekeeping and transportation services. Plus, she never has to worry about shoveling snow again. “…the community setting is really lovely because they drive me. In case I want to go to the dentist or a doctor, they just drive me to the doctor or to the dentist. And it’s wonderful.” – Ruth Nelson

FAMILY SEAL OF APPROVAL
Ruth’s nephew looks after the family home now, and while he looks after Ruth, too, forever gone are the worries of “what if?” Whatever happens, Ruth and her nephew know she is in good hands and always having fun at The Fountains. “…he thinks it’s great. He really thinks it’s wonderful and I do too. I love it here. I couldn’t ask for anything better.” – Ruth Nelson
